Week 46: Customization (The Bullet Journal Method Book Club)

Hello Sunshine!

This is the perfect section for those little techniques and updates to customize your Bullet Journal. These little customizations remind me of what the initial iterations and experiments Bullet Journalists debated over and shared in the community were like. These still are incredibly impactful.

Welcome to week 46 of The Bullet Journal Method Book Club!

Customization doesn’t only mean creating new Custom Collections, it also means you can customize existing components of the Bullet Journal.

Long-Form Journaling:

“The benefits of long-form journaling are well documented, especially when it comes to stress reduction and combating anxiety.” One way you can incorporate long-form journaling is by customizing your Daily Log to capture thoughts and long-form journaling.

When you check in with your Daily Log during your Daily Reflection, jot down any thoughts just like any other Note. However, this isn’t just any other Note. This one won’t let you go, it’s distracting.

Turn this Note dash “-“ into a plus “+” in order to quickly unpack it when you’re ready to write about it. When you do write about it, take up as much as room as you need. “That’s what your Bullet Journal is there for, after all.” This is a useful technique for whenever you need it. See page 271 for an example.

Additionally, you can create a Task based on what you wrote in your long-form entry.

Habit Tracking:

Another way to customize an existing Collection is by integrating a habit tracker into your Monthly Log. Create columns to the side of the Monthly Log and add a key of letters for habits you’d like to track. For example, C, R, and G for C = Cook, R = Read, and G = Gym, respectively.

Add this Key to the bottom of the Monthly Log so your future self will know what the letters stand for. Add Task Bullets to the columns so you can mark them complete when you’ve successfully taken action.

Other examples of customizing existing parts of the Bullet Journal is adding affirmations or the weather to your Daily Log. “Feel free to adjust everything. As always, do what works for you. To be clear, I’m not saying do whatever you want! Be sure that any additions or customizations prove themselves helpful over and over again. Less, but better.”

Discussion:

  • What are customizations you’ve found useful?

  • How have you customized an existing part of the Bullet Journal?

  • What are you looking forward to customizing in your Bullet Journal?

Action List:

  • Try Long-Form Journaling with the plus “+” in your Daily Log

  • Try integrating Habit Tracking in your Monthly Log for one or two months to see how this works for you. Keep it to 3 habits or less to start.
